Rainwater Collection Systems for Driveways

Rain purifies the air, and cleanses the ground. It can be polite, or a terrible force of nature to be feared. New hardscape designs always include a drainage plan, and installers meticulously carry out those plans.

On a driveway, rain combined with improper drainage leads to erosion and possibly even wash outs. These unacceptable safety hazards drive the meticulous nature of designers and installers when it comes to drainage plans. I consider this to be a reactive behavior in construction.

However, drainage plans can also be proactive. I consider a proactive solution one that not only solves problems, but also creates new benefits. Lemons into lemonade so to speak.

Rainwater collection for later use in gardening and landscape creates that proactive solution for hardscape drainage plans. The paved area directs run-off into large tanks where the water is stored for later use. The collection tanks can be 5 gallons, 200 gallons, or even larger. Electric pumps in the system provide water pressure to move the irrigation (as I mentioned before), or the water can be moved downhill only using gravity.

These systems have been implemented in areas with large amounts of rainfall, such as the Pacific Northwest, and in arid regions such as Southern California. Combined with a Xeriscape landscape design, your yard could be drought proof!
